Varanasi, often called the spiritual heart of India, is once again at the centre of a heated discussion—this time over a proposal to rename 50 localities currently bearing Mughal-era names. The city’s municipal corporation is set to deliberate on the proposal, igniting conversations on history, identity, and heritage.
A name change or a cultural revival?
For many locals, the names of neighbourhoods are more than just signboards; they hold stories, emotions, and a sense of belonging. The proposal aims to replace names linked to Mughal rulers and officials with those reflecting the city’s deep-rooted cultural and spiritual legacy. Proponents argue that renaming these areas is a step toward reclaiming Varanasi’s identity, aligning its public spaces with figures and events that resonate more with its history.
A retired professor, who has spent his entire life in one such locality, believes the change is overdue. “Varanasi is thousands of years old, older than many civilisations. Why should our streets and neighbourhoods carry the names of those who once ruled over us? It is time we honour our own.”
Mixed reactions on the streets
However, not everyone shares this enthusiasm. For some, these names have become part of their everyday lives, their addresses for generations. A local shopkeeper, whose business has operated under one such Mughal-era name for decades, is sceptical. “Changing names won’t change history. Will my customers still recognise the new name? What about legal documents? These things matter to small people like us.”
Social media is abuzz with discussions. While some celebrate the move as an assertion of India’s indigenous heritage, others see it as unnecessary tampering with history. Some argue that instead of focusing on name changes, authorities should prioritise improving infrastructure, traffic management, and urban planning in Varanasi.
The municipal corporation is expected to discuss the matter in an upcoming meeting. If approved, the renaming process will require further permissions at the state level before implementation. Whether the names change or not, one thing is certain—Varanasi, a city that has stood the test of time, will continue to be a living, breathing story of faith, culture, and history.
As debates rage on, the ghats of the Ganges remain witness to it all—just as they have for centuries.
