Wiki Woes: Editors Booked Over Sambhaji Maharaj Content

The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has registered a case against at least four Wikipedia editors for failing to remove allegedly objectionable content about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj from the online encyclopedia. The agency had previously issued a notice to the California-based Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts Wikipedia, requesting the removal of the disputed content. The notice stated that the content was inaccurate and could potentially lead to a law-and-order situation in the state, as Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is a highly revered figure. With no response from Wikimedia, the Cyber Cell proceeded to file a case under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. This controversy coincides with the release of the Hindi film “Chhaava,” based on Sambhaji Maharaj’s life, which has intensified public interest and scrutiny over related online content.
