At a time when India’s content landscape is changing rapidly, Aahana Kumra believes storytelling today requires far greater courage and honesty from creators. Known for her performances in Lipstick Under My Burkha and The Accidental Prime Minister, along with web series like Marzi and Avrodh, the actor feels audiences have evolved and expect deeper, more authentic narratives.
Speaking about how storytelling has shifted in today’s content-driven era, Aahana said that being “brave” is no longer optional. According to her, creators cannot stay on the surface anymore. They must explore complex layers and present stories that feel real. She pointed out that viewers today are extremely aware, with easy access to global content across platforms like YouTube and streaming services. As a result, any attempt to glorify or distort reality is quickly identified and questioned.
Referring to her recent work in Dhurandhar, she shared a powerful line from the project that reflects this shift: “We’re not skirting the line anymore.” For Aahana, this captures the essence of modern storytelling. Audiences want honesty, and creators must meet that expectation with sincerity and depth. She added that today’s environment also encourages equality, where age or experience does not define capability. Instead, it is the willingness to learn and adapt that matters.
Beyond acting, Aahana has also stepped into production with her Mumbai-based banner Working Panda Films. She described this transition as a significant shift in perspective. As an actor, she operated within a defined creative space. However, as a producer, she now engages with a much broader process that includes storytelling, business decisions, and collaboration. This expanded role, she said, is both challenging and exciting.
Aahana was speaking on the sidelines of Content India 2026, a major three-day gathering organised by Dish TV India. The event brought together over 700 industry professionals from global platforms, studios, and production houses to discuss the future of storytelling and content business.
Reflecting on the importance of such platforms, she highlighted how they offer valuable learning opportunities. With participation from global giants like Netflix, Amazon, and Google, the event creates a space where key industry decisions take shape. Aahana noted that listening to experienced professionals provides insights that can shape one’s creative and professional journey.
She also shared that many industry peers have responded positively to her move into production. According to her, this new role has given her a deeper understanding of the challenges actors face, as well as the demands of the market. With years of acting experience behind her, Aahana feels this transition is opening up a fresh and more comprehensive perspective on the industry.
