In a recent TV debate on News18 Kerala, BJP leader Printu Mahadev made a shocking remark about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Speaking in Malayalam, he said, “If Rahul Gandhi sets out with such a desire or dream, a bullet will fall even on his chest.” The comment came while discussing potential protests in India, comparing them to events in Bangladesh. Mahadev suggested that unlike in Bangladesh, where people did not support the government, in India the public is behind the Narendra Modi government, implying that any protests here would be suppressed. Many have condemned the remark as a direct death threat to the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Congress has reacted strongly to this statement. General Secretary KC Venugopal wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding “immediate and exemplary” legal action against Mahadev. He stressed that this was not just a slip of the tongue but a “cold, calculated, and chilling death threat.” Venugopal also highlighted the sensitivity of the matter, pointing out that Rahul Gandhi’s family has already suffered tragic assassinations, with his grandmother Indira Gandhi and father Rajiv Gandhi being killed in the past. Threats like these, in that context, are taken very seriously.
So far, Amit Shah and the government have not responded to Congress’s demand for action.
The big question now is whether Mahadev’s remark was an unfortunate slip of the tongue or a deliberate threat. If it was a slip, the public expects him to apologize openly and take responsibility. If it was intentional, the BJP must act quickly to show that such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated within the party.
This incident highlights how important it is for public figures to speak responsibly, especially those in positions of power. Threats whether implied or direct have no place in a democracy and need to be addressed immediately. Congress’s demand for action reflects the seriousness of the situation, and people are now waiting to see how both the BJP and the Home Minister respond.
At a time when political discourse is already heated, this serves as a reminder that leaders must be careful with their words. The safety, dignity, and trust of citizens cannot be taken lightly, and accountability should always come first.
