Thousands of students and aspirants across India have secured long overdue refunds from coaching centres, thanks to swift intervention by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA). Over 600 students from Civil Services, Engineering, and other courses successfully reclaimed a total of ₹1.56 crore through grievances filed with the National Consumer Helpline (NCH).

Coaching institutes have long faced criticism for rigid refund policies, often denying students their rightful claims despite clear terms and conditions. DoCA has now stepped in, directing all coaching centres to adopt a student-first approach and put an end to exploitative refund denials.

By leveraging NCH, students have successfully challenged coaching institutes that failed to deliver promised services, conducted delayed classes, or abruptly cancelled courses. The initiative has ensured that students are no longer forced to absorb financial losses due to unfair business practices.

In a strong directive, the Department of Consumer Affairs has made it clear that denying legitimate refunds will not be tolerated. Coaching centres must ensure transparent and student-friendly refund policies that prioritise consumer rights.

DoCA is also actively strengthening the consumer grievance redressal mechanism, spreading awareness about student rights, and encouraging aspirants to take action against exploitative practices.

National Consumer Helpline: A game changer

The National Consumer Helpline (NCH) has proven to be an effective weapon in the fight against unfair practices. Many students have shared their positive experiences of securing refunds without enduring prolonged legal battles. The platform has successfully facilitated pre-litigation dispute resolution, saving students time and effort while ensuring justice.

  • Hostel accommodation scam (Chennai, Tamil Nadu): A student faced subpar hostel services, violating the promised standards. After filing a complaint via NCH, a refund was successfully processed.
  • Psychology workshop fraud (Rajkot, Gujarat): A consumer, pressured into enrolling in a workshop under false urgency, was denied a seat and a refund. NCH intervention led to a full refund.
  • JEE coaching dispute (Jamshedpur, Jharkhand): A student who had paid for a coaching course was later told their payment was unrecognised. After raising a complaint with NCH, the refund was processed.

DoCA continues to advocate for student rights, urging those facing refund disputes to utilise the National Consumer Helpline for swift resolution. Coaching centres are being held accountable, and transparency is now a necessity, not a choice.

With proactive government intervention and increasing student awareness, the tide is turning against unfair refund policies. If coaching institutes fail to comply, they risk facing stricter actions in the future.
