India observed Constitution Day with nationwide ceremonies highlighting the enduring significance of the Constitution as the foundation of Indian democracy. President Droupadi Murmu, addressing the event at Samvidhan Sadan, emphasized that the Constitution is not merely a legal document but the embodiment of India’s collective aspirations, social justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. She urged citizens to uphold its values and carry forward the vision of the framers with renewed commitment.
Constitution Day, first observed in 2015 on the 125th birth anniversary of Dr B. R. Ambedkar, serves as a reminder to honour the architects of the Constitution and strengthen awareness of its principles among citizens, especially the youth. The President highlighted that the Constitution continues to guide the nation’s governance, policy-making, and social progress. Its provisions ensure that India’s parliamentary democracy functions effectively, representing the voices of its diverse population while promoting justice, equity, and inclusion.
President Murmu spoke about the critical role of Parliament and its members as “bearers, creators, and witnesses” of India’s democratic tradition. She underscored that lawmakers have a responsibility to translate constitutional ideals into tangible outcomes, fostering social, economic, and political progress. The President also urged citizens to embrace a nationalist outlook rooted in constitutional values and to move beyond any remnants of a colonial mindset.
Reflecting on India’s achievements over the decades, she noted significant progress in poverty reduction, social justice, and development programs that demonstrate the Constitution’s transformative impact. The President also referred to reforms in the criminal justice system as examples of India moving towards a more just and constitutionally aligned governance model.
Concluding her address, President Murmu reaffirmed faith in India’s democratic institutions — the legislature, judiciary, and executive as pillars that uphold the Constitution’s spirit. She called upon every citizen to live by its principles to strengthen India’s democracy and build an inclusive, prosperous, and resilient nation. Constitution Day 2025 thus stood as a powerful reminder of the enduring relevance of India’s Constitution and the collective responsibility to ensure that its vision continues to guide the country towards a strong and united future
