A major fire broke out in Dharavi on Friday, causing significant disruption to Mumbai’s train services and road traffic. The blaze started near Mahim Railway Station, close to the Sion–Mahim Link Road, one of the city’s most crowded areas. The fire was dangerously close to railway tracks, which prompted an immediate response from authorities. Thick smoke was seen rising from the area, creating panic among residents and passersby. People living and working nearby were forced to evacuate to safer locations as the fire spread quickly through the narrow lanes of this densely populated neighbourhood.
Firefighters from several stations, including Dadar, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Bandra, and Sion, rushed to the scene to control the fire. Battling the flames was particularly challenging due to the congested streets and closely built structures. Officials confirmed that the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the full extent of the damage is not yet known. Preliminary reports suggest that several small shops, temporary structures, and residences may have been affected, though there have been no confirmed reports of injuries so far.
Because the fire was so close to the railway tracks, Western Railway had to halt services between Mahim and Bandra stations. At least five trains were delayed, affecting thousands of daily commuters. Passengers were seen waiting on platforms as authorities worked to ensure safety and resume train operations. Commuters expressed frustration at the sudden disruption, but many praised the swift response of the emergency teams in preventing the fire from spreading further.
Road traffic was also heavily affected. The 60-Feet Road, which runs close to the fire site, saw major congestion as fire trucks, emergency vehicles, and authorities worked to bring the blaze under control. The incident underscores the risks posed by fires in densely populated urban areas like Dharavi, where narrow lanes, overcrowding, and closely built structures can make firefighting operations difficult.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, coordinating between fire services, railway officials, and local police to ensure safety. The incident highlights the importance of fire safety measures, emergency preparedness, and rapid response in high-density areas of Mumbai.
