In a powerful example of courage and timely intervention, HOSMAT Hospitals honoured Head Constable Sridhar Murthy with the Good Samaritan Award for saving the life of a 38-year-old man on railway tracks near RMZ Galleria in Bengaluru.
The incident unfolded when Murthy, who was on “Cheetah” patrol duty, responded to a control room alert. Acting swiftly, he reached the location and found the individual in an intoxicated state on the tracks. With only minutes to spare before an approaching train, Murthy pulled the man to safety, preventing what could have been a tragic loss of life. Beyond the rescue, he also took the time to counsel the individual, ensuring emotional reassurance in a moment of crisis.
The Good Samaritan Award, instituted in 2001 by the late Dr. Thomas Chandy, recognises individuals who step forward in critical situations to help accident victims and those in distress. The award highlights the importance of timely intervention during the Golden Hour, a crucial period when immediate medical attention can significantly improve survival chances.
India continues to face a serious challenge with road accidents and emergency response delays. With over 1.5 lakh deaths reported annually due to road accidents, studies suggest that nearly half of these fatalities could be prevented with prompt assistance. This makes citizen-led intervention and awareness more important than ever.
Speaking on the occasion, Anisha Chandy Eckardt, Managing Director of HOSMAT Hospitals, emphasised that the award represents a simple yet powerful belief that every life matters. She noted that Murthy’s courage and empathy reflect the spirit of the initiative, which aims to inspire more people to act responsibly in emergencies. She added that while the hospital continues to expand into multispecialty services, its core mission remains saving lives when every second counts.
With a strong legacy in orthopaedics and trauma care, HOSMAT Hospitals has played a key role in managing critical emergencies and spreading awareness about the importance of immediate medical response. Initiatives like the Good Samaritan Award reflect the institution’s commitment to building a more responsive and compassionate society.
Over the years, the award has recognised several individuals from diverse backgrounds who have shown exceptional initiative during life-threatening situations. Notable recipients include former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad and former Police Commissioner H. T. Sangliana, along with transport workers, students and everyday citizens who have stepped up in moments of need.
Each awardee receives a certificate of appreciation, a shawl and a cash prize of ₹20,000 as recognition for their selfless service. As urban centres continue to face increasing emergency situations, stories like that of Sridhar Murthy stand as a reminder that timely human action can save lives and that true heroes often go unnoticed.
