Indian television has long been a staple of daily entertainment, weaving emotional sagas that keep millions glued to their screens. Shows like Anupamaa and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai have become household names, with fans investing years in their favourite characters’ journeys. But lately, a growing trend is testing that loyalty: sudden time leaps, actor replacements, and abrupt storyline shifts.
Just when viewers fall in love with a couple or root for a character’s growth, the story fast-forwards a decade, beloved actors exit, or new faces take over. The result? A rollercoaster of emotions that often leaves fans frustrated rather than fulfilled. So, why are Indian TV serials obsessed with leaps—and are they really boosting those coveted TRP ratings?
The Leap Trend: A Recipe for Drama or Disaster?
Time leaps have become a go-to strategy for Indian TV serials, especially on channels like Star Plus and Colors. In 2024 alone, Anupamaa took multiple leaps—first a five-year jump in December 2023, followed by a 10-year leap in October 2024, shifting the narrative from Anupamaa’s personal struggles to her reunion with Aadhya/Raahi and a budding love story with Prem Kothari.
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai also embraced the leap formula, focusing on Abhira and Armaan‘s evolving dynamics post-pregnancy revelations. Other serials like Bhagya Lakshmi and Jhanak have also followed suit, with recent reports hinting at 20-year jumps.
These leaps often age characters overnight, introduce new faces, or reset storylines entirely. For example, Anupamaa saw major cast changes post-leap: Gaurav Khanna (Anuj Kapadia) exited in December 2024, citing creative reasons, while Alisha Parveen Khan was replaced overnight by Adrija Roy. Similarly, in Yeh Rishta, actors Shehzada Dhami and Pratiksha Honmukhe were removed due to alleged unprofessional behaviour—promptly replaced to sustain the show.
“TV isn’t just entertainment—it’s daily companionship. When stories leap overnight, it feels like losing a friend mid-conversation.” — A frustrated fan on X
Why Leaps? The TRP Chase
The primary motive behind these leaps? Television Rating Points (TRPs). These determine a show’s popularity and drive advertising revenue.
Leaps are introduced to:
- Refresh the narrative: Target younger viewers or bring in new conflicts.
- Extend a show’s life: Long-running series like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (since 2009) use leaps to avoid stagnation.
- Create buzz: Shocking deaths, new love angles, or breakups boost social media traction.
But does it always work? Not necessarily. While Anupamaa has mostly topped TRP charts (2.3 TVR in Week 40, 2024), it slipped to second place in November 2024, overtaken by Yeh Rishta’s emotionally engaging pregnancy arc. In Week 13 of 2025, Udne Ki Aasha rose to the top with 2.2 TVR—proving that fresh, relatable stories can outperform gimmicky leaps.
Are Leaps Worth the Risk?
Yes, leaps can boost short-term TRPs, but their long-term effect is mixed. Shows like Anupamaa maintained strong ratings due to solid writing, but even they are vulnerable to drops. Meanwhile, Yeh Rishta’s emotional arc and Udne Ki Aasha’s originality show that authentic storytelling wins over abrupt leaps.
What’s Next for Indian TV?
As 2025 progresses, new shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 and Mannat: Har Khushi Paane Ki are joining the fray. Will they follow the leap-and-replace model—or chart a new path rooted in narrative depth?
Only time—and TRP charts—will tell.
