The Karnataka government has announced a statewide cap of ₹200 on movie tickets across all theatres and multiplexes. The move, part of the state budget for 2025-26, aims to make cinema more affordable for audiences.
Ticket Price Regulation Across Karnataka
The price cap applies to all formats, including 2D, 3D, and IMAX screenings. However, it excludes gold class, director’s cut, and similar premium categories. Home Minister G. Parameshwara confirmed that the regulation is intended to curb excessive pricing, ensuring that entertainment remains accessible to the public.
The government will also regulate online ticket booking platforms, preventing additional charges beyond the capped price. Further guidelines will be issued to ensure compliance across all cinema halls.
Industry and Public Reactions
The announcement has received mixed reactions from the film industry and theatre owners. While audiences have welcomed the move, exhibitors express concerns over profitability and sustainability, especially for premium multiplexes.
The decision aligns Karnataka with states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, where similar ticket price regulations are in place. The government has defended the cap, stating that it will promote cinema culture and prevent exploitative pricing.
Karnataka Budget & Political Reactions
The budget also increased allocations for minority welfare, leading to criticism from opposition parties. The BJP has raised concerns over funding for Muslim reservations, calling it discriminatory. The ruling party, however, maintains that the budget focuses on inclusive development.
The ticket price cap is expected to take effect soon, with further clarifications on implementation guidelines to be released.
