The Department of Legal Affairs, under the Ministry of Law and Justice, recently observed Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas Pakhwada with a series of thoughtful activities aimed at honouring the rich legacy of India’s tribal communities. The occasion was dedicated to celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, one of the country’s most respected tribal freedom fighters, whose life and sacrifices continue to inspire the nation. Birsa Munda is remembered not only for his courageous resistance against British rule, but also for his unwavering commitment to protecting the cultural identity, rights and dignity of tribal groups. His legacy stands as a symbol of India’s broader values of justice, equality and cultural diversity.
The observance was organised under the leadership of Law Secretary Dr Anju Rathi Rana, who guided the Department in highlighting the historical and cultural importance of tribal communities. Tribal groups have played a foundational role in India’s nation-building journey, contributing to its social strength, environmental stewardship and cultural richness. The initiative aimed to remind staff and participants of how indigenous communities have shaped India’s history, often through struggles that remain under-acknowledged in mainstream narratives. Birsa Munda’s story, in particular, served as a powerful focal point for these discussions, demonstrating the enduring relevance of his leadership and ideals.
As a key part of the programme, the Department screened a short video titled Life and Contributions of Birsa Munda. This audio-visual presentation provided a detailed glimpse into the tribal way of life, their traditions, their deep relationship with nature and their collective resilience in the face of hardship. The screening encouraged viewers to reflect on the cultural richness and historical achievements of tribal communities, while also recognising their ongoing contributions to the nation’s identity.
Following the screening, the Department held a certificate awarding ceremony to conclude an essay competition organised on the theme Contributions of Tribal Communities in National History and Culture. Officers and staff members from different wings of the Department participated actively, expressing their appreciation for tribal heritage through thoughtful essays. Their participation reflected a shared commitment to expanding awareness, promoting inclusivity and celebrating India’s diverse cultural roots.
