The Tamil Nadu Budget 2026-27 is the first budget presented by the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by C. Joseph Vijay. Finance Minister Marie Wilson presented the budget in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The budget focuses heavily on welfare schemes, education, infrastructure, healthcare and women’s welfare. It is based on the government’s ‘Vetri Tamizhagam’ vision. The total spending budget for Tamil Nadu for the 2026–27 financial year is projected to be approximately ₹4.80 lakh crore, while total revenue receipts are estimated at ₹3.44 lakh crore.
Major welfare announcements
Gold rings for newborns:
The government has launched the Thaai Maman Thanga Mothiram Thittam. Under the scheme, every baby born in a government hospital will receive a 1-gram gold ring. The initiative aims to celebrate childbirth and provide support to families. A budget of ₹560 crore has been allocated for the scheme, which is scheduled to begin in September.
Annan Seer Scheme:
The government has introduced the Annan Seer Scheme with a budget allocation of ₹812 crore. Under the scheme, eligible women will receive an 8-gram (one sovereign) gold coin and a silk saree at the time of their marriage. The initiative fulfils one of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s key election promises.
Free bicycles and helmets for students:
The government has allocated ₹277 crore to provide free branded bicycles and helmets to 5.32 lakh Class 11 students studying in government schools. The scheme will be implemented during the 2026–27 academic year to support students and encourage safer travel to school.
Vettri Laptop Scheme:
The government has announced the Vettri Laptop Scheme with an allocation of ₹2,000 crore. Under this initiative, college students will receive free laptops to improve digital learning and enhance their educational opportunities.
AI training and skill development:
The government plans to provide artificial intelligence (AI) training to 5 lakh youth by 2031. It will also introduce skill development programmes for 12 lakh college students and 1 lakh unemployed youth to improve employability and prepare them for future job opportunities.
Olympic sports training centres:
A budget of ₹50 crore has been allocated to establish 10 Olympic-focused sports training centres across the state. The initiative aims to strengthen sports infrastructure and support aspiring athletes.
Free cattle for women:
The government has earmarked ₹57 crore to provide free cattle to 10,000 women. The scheme is intended to support rural women by helping them generate income and improve their livelihoods.
Breakfast scheme expansion:
The government has announced the expansion of its breakfast scheme to cover students up to Class 8. The move aims to improve nutrition and support children’s health and education.
New anganwadi centres:
The government will establish 500 new anganwadi centres across Tamil Nadu to strengthen early childhood care, nutrition and education services for children and mothers.
Old-age homes:
The budget includes plans to set up 12 new old-age homes across the state. The initiative aims to provide better care and support for senior citizens.
Political Significance:
This is the first budget presented by CM Vijay’s government after TVK came to power earlier this year. The budget is being viewed as the first major test of CM Vijay’s governance. Many of the announced schemes were part of TVK’s ‘Vetri Tamizhagam’ election promises.
