Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday, marking a significant step towards restoring diplomatic engagement between the two countries after years of strained relations.
The meeting, held at the Great Hall of the People, comes during Carney’s first official visit to China since assuming office. The discussions focused on rebuilding trust, expanding economic cooperation and addressing long-standing bilateral challenges. Both leaders acknowledged the importance of stable relations at a time when global trade patterns are shifting and geopolitical pressures are increasing.
President Xi highlighted the need for mutual respect and practical cooperation, stressing that China and Canada should work together to strengthen strategic ties and promote balanced development. He noted that improved relations could benefit both economies and contribute to global stability.
Prime Minister Carney described the talks as constructive and forward-looking. He emphasised Canada’s intention to diversify its international partnerships and strengthen engagement with Asia. Carney pointed to opportunities in sectors such as energy, agriculture, finance and clean technology, where closer cooperation could deliver long-term economic gains.
The leaders also agreed to revive regular high-level dialogues and enhance people-to-people exchanges, including academic and cultural cooperation. Officials said these measures aim to rebuild institutional trust and create more consistent communication channels between the two governments.
Relations between Ottawa and Beijing had deteriorated in recent years following diplomatic disputes, trade restrictions and political disagreements. The current meeting signals a shared willingness to stabilise ties while continuing dialogue on unresolved issues.
Despite the positive tone, both sides acknowledged that challenges remain. Trade barriers, regulatory concerns and geopolitical differences are expected to feature in future negotiations. However, the renewed engagement reflects a mutual understanding that sustained dialogue is essential to managing differences and advancing shared interests.
Observers believe the Beijing talks could pave the way for broader cooperation while positioning Canada to strengthen its economic resilience through diversified global partnerships.
