Amid the rising incidence of head and neck cancer in India, medical experts have stressed the importance of continued vigilance and timely screening. If you have a mouth ulcer that lasts for more than 5 to 10 days, do not ignore it as a minor issue and consult a doctor immediately, as it could be an early warning sign of cancer.
On the occasion of World Head and Neck Cancer Day, Dr. Amit Chakraborty, Head & Neck Cancer Surgeon at SSO Hospital, emphasized the critical need for cancer survivors to remain cautious and undergo regular follow-ups even after successful treatment. He noted that survivors remain at risk of recurrence.
Elaborating further, Dr. Amit Chakraborty stated that head and neck cancer can recur in approximately 20 to 40 out of every 100 treated patients. However, with early detection and routine follow-ups, recurrences can be diagnosed in time and managed successfully.
Sharing their personal journeys, 43-year-old Mihir Jobanputra and 70-year-old Dinkar Adhav explained how timely diagnosis and surgery helped them return to healthy lives. They urged the public to completely stay away from tobacco, gutkha, and smoking, and warned against ignoring persistent mouth ulcers, white patches, or any unusual changes inside the mouth.
According to medical experts, consumption of tobacco, gutkha, areca nut (supari), alcohol, and HPV infection rank among the primary risk factors for head and neck cancer. Adopting a healthy lifestyle and eliminating harmful habits can significantly lower the risk of developing this life-threatening disease.
