A sudden political shift in Maharashtra’s Ambernath municipal council has drawn attention across the state after 12 Congress councillors joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The move has changed the balance of power in the civic body and triggered fresh political tensions at the local level.
The councillors, who were elected on Congress tickets in the recent municipal elections, crossed over to the BJP days after being suspended by their party. Their defection has strengthened the BJP’s position in the Ambernath Municipal Council, which had been witnessing unstable alliances since the election results.
Earlier, the civic body saw an unusual arrangement where the Congress had extended support to a BJP-backed formation, leading to criticism within the party. The Congress leadership later suspended the councillors, accusing them of acting against party discipline. Soon after, all 12 formally joined the BJP, deepening the political fallout.
With this switch, the BJP has gained a decisive edge in the council, unsettling existing equations involving the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, which had emerged as the single largest party in Ambernath. The development has raised questions about coordination and trust within the ruling Mahayuti alliance at the local level.
The Congress, meanwhile, has announced that it will explore legal options, including seeking the disqualification of the defecting councillors under anti-defection provisions. Party leaders argue that voters had elected these representatives on the Congress symbol, and changing sides after the polls undermines the public mandate.
For residents of Ambernath, the political churn has created uncertainty about governance and stability. While the BJP has defended the move by stating that the councillors joined in the interest of development and smoother administration, opposition leaders have called it opportunistic politics.
The episode highlights how municipal politics in Maharashtra often mirror larger power struggles seen at the state level. Small councils have increasingly become arenas for testing political strength, alliance loyalty, and electoral strategy.
As legal and political battles unfold, Ambernath’s local governance remains under close watch. The defection has not only reshaped the council but also added another chapter to Maharashtra’s ever-shifting political landscape.
