Television actor Manas Shah has voiced strong concerns about the current state of Indian television, saying the industry has stopped evolving and continues to rely on outdated storytelling. The Yeh Hai Chahatein actor believes that a lack of fresh ideas is affecting both the quality of television shows and their ability to connect with modern audiences.
Speaking about his career, Manas admitted that he is not excited by the roles currently being offered on television. According to him, the problem is not a lack of opportunities but the industry’s reluctance to embrace change. He feels television has become repetitive, with makers repeatedly reviving concepts that worked years ago instead of creating original content.
Reflecting on the industry’s journey, Manas said there was a time when Indian television produced memorable stories and launched some of the country’s biggest stars. However, he believes that phase has faded, with many channels continuing to recycle familiar formats rather than taking creative risks. In his view, this has led to a noticeable decline in both presentation and storytelling.
He also highlighted the growing disconnect between television and Generation Z audiences. Manas believes younger viewers have become more discerning and expect content that reflects their interests and experiences. Since television has largely failed to cater to this audience, many young people now prefer films and web series that offer more contemporary themes and better production values.
Expressing concern about the future of the medium, Manas warned that television could gradually lose its relevance if it continues on its current path. With world-class web series being produced across streaming platforms, he questioned why viewers would choose traditional television unless it significantly improves its standards.
Another issue that Manas addressed was the growing influence of social media personalities in the entertainment industry. He believes the rapid rise of influencer culture after the COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on casting decisions. According to him, social media following has increasingly become a deciding factor, often taking precedence over acting talent.
Manas stressed that acting is a profession that requires proper training, discipline and continuous learning. While influencers may enjoy immense popularity online, he believes professional acting demands far more than a large follower count. He pointed out that several web series now feature influencers who have little formal acting experience, raising concerns about the industry’s priorities.
The actor also expressed sympathy for trained performers who are struggling to find opportunities. He believes casting decisions are increasingly influenced by popularity, appearance and online engagement rather than genuine acting ability. As a result, many talented actors are finding it harder to secure meaningful roles.
At the same time, Manas clarified that he is not against influencers. He acknowledged that they play an important role in advertising, brand endorsements and product promotions. However, he argued that films and television should continue to prioritise skilled performers if they want to maintain artistic quality and audience trust.
Talking about his upcoming work, Manas revealed that he was previously part of the web series Burari Kaand: House of Secrets. While the second season is currently in production, he did not reveal any details about the cast. He also shared that he will soon be seen playing a paranormal activist in another upcoming web series, adding yet another diverse role to his growing body of work.
