He strongly criticised certain practices of the Catholic Church, especially the selling of ‘indulgences’ payments people made in exchange for forgiveness. Luther’s bold step challenged church authority and started what became known as the Protestant Reformation.

 Event: Birth of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel – Year: 1875

Born on this day in 1875 in Gujarat, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel became one of India’s most respected leaders. He played a crucial role in uniting more than 500 princely states after India gained independence in 1947. Because of his firm and practical leadership, he is known as the Iron Man of India.

His efforts helped build the strong foundation of a united and democratic India. To honour his contribution, 31 October is celebrated every year as National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas). In India, on 31 October 2018, the Statue of Unity was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat. Standing at 182 metres, it is the tallest statue in the world and honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for his unmatched contribution to India’s unity.
